This is my first game since I learned of Bryan's passing, without whom the hobby as I know and love it would not exist. I wanted to pay some kind of homage to him, so tried to replicate this very iconic pose of him. RIP…

Deployment

The greenskin player won the roll-off, and decided to take the first turn, so had to deploy his units first.
We use the deployment method from Warhammer Fantasy Battles 3e, where units are deployed in order of MOV. As the only unit of the greenskins with MOV@3 was the engine of war, that was deployed first, then all the Dwarves, then the rest of the Orcs & Goblin batallion.
image

Bout 1

Turn 1.1 - Orcs & Goblins

Turn Start Phase

Both goblin units passed their animosity test.
The trolls passed their stupidity test under the threats of their goblin leader.

Movement Phase

Da Rumbler wagon rolled for 8" of movement, the rest of the batallion advanced as far as they were able to.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The stone thrower crew was quite good with their range estimation of 44", but the strong winds made the boulder deviate 7" between units were it hit no-one.
image

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

No events.

Reserves Phase

All units continued their advance; except for the Da Rumbler, which is not allowed a reserves move.
image

Magïck Phase

Both shamans passed their 'eadbanger test.
Drirzud, the orc shaman, rolled 1 + 5 for the Wïnds of Magïck; Zriglom, the goblin shaman, rolled 3 + 4. So the dwarves had a dispel pool of 9.
Drirzud cast B1.4 - Dispirit on the thunderers with 3 power tokens spent, and scored a casting number of 10 on his 3D(avg). The dwarves dispelled with 4D(avg) and scored a 12; so the spell did not take effect.
Zriglom cast B1.7 - Flight with 2D(avg), but the dwarves beat the casting number of 5 with a dispel score of 7 on their 2d(avg).
Next, Drirzud tried to N1.4 - Summon Skeletons, scoring an 11 on 4D(avg). Fearing what else might be cast their way, the dwarves kept two dispel dice in reserve and let the spell take effect. Three skeletons appeared in front of the Burnin' Moonerz. 11.
But the greenskin shamans were done.

Turn 1.2- Dwarves

Turn Start Phase

No events.

Movement Phase

Some dwarves advanced, while others remained stationary. The engines of war turned towards their intended targets.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The cannon opened up on the pump wagon. The crew filled the barrel with enough powder for a 24” shot, some unexpected overpressure propelled the ball 7” farther, then the ball bounced forward 7", affecting anything in its path. This lead to a direct hit on the pump wagon, which's snotling crew bailed out and ran away in panic. This left a formidable obstacle to slow down the greenskin advance.
The bolt thrower had also turned to target the pump wagon, but as it was already destroyed and no other targets were straight ahead, it had no target left.
The Grey Section sent their bolts in the direction of the trolls, scored one hit and caused 1 wound.
The Orange Section attacked the ogre mercenaries, and also scored 1 hit and 1 wound.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

No events.

Reserves Phase

The Blue Company, the Hammerer Company, the Pink Thunderer Section and the Grey Crossbow Section all continued their advance.
In hindsight, this wasn't allowed as with crossbows, when you are moving in either the movement or reserve phase, you are not allowed to attack with them in ranged combat. Lesson learned for the next game…
image

Magïck Phase

No events.

Rally Phase

No events.

Turn End Phase

The troll, which had suffered a wound from a crossbow bolt, regenerated the damage caused, picking the bolt from his skin "oi, whad's dis…?" and scratching behind his ear with the bolt, where it was itching all day, but he wasn't able to reach with his thick fingers.
image

Bout 2

Turn 2.1 - Orcs & Goblins

Turn Start Phase

Again, the greenskins passed their animosity tests, and Skrinkic managed to focus the trolls' attention on the stunties again (theiy passed their stupidity test).

Movement Phase

The whole horde surged forwards.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The orc stone thrower crew again well estimated the range to the dwarves, and the shot did not even deviate! Which could have been beneficial, as it landed on taget at a blank spot right between two units…
image
The Eeevil Eyez sent their short arrows against the Hammerers Company but di not score any hits.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

No events.

Reserves Phase

Again, everyone stormed forwards. The Burnin' Moonerz came into range of the Hammerer Company, and pushed forward the fanatics hiding in their ranks, but none of the loonies made contact with the dwarves.
image
The Slasherz were slowed down by the wreckage of the pump wagon, as half the company had to climb over it.
image

Magïck Phase

Zriglom, the goblin shaman, passed his 'eadbanger test, but Drirzud just failed it (one pip more on the dice and he would have passed, and Forgot! his B1.5 — Enthuse spell.
Zriglom rolled 4 & 6 for the Wïnds of Magïck, which provided the dwarves with 6 dispel dice.
He spent 3 tokens to cast B1.7 — Flight, for which he scored a casting number of 14. The dwarves dispelled with 3D(avg) but only scored an 11. Zriglom took off, and landed behind the Grey Crossbow Section, which caused some concern with the dwarf commander.
image
He then cast B1.11 — Leg breaking with an 8 on 2D(avg) on Dogmir Broadfist, the dwarven batallion standard bearer, but the dwarves dispelled the spell with a 10 on 3D(avg).
Finally, Zriglom cast B1.4 — Dispirit successfully on the Pink Thunderer Section, but the dwarves passed their magïck saving roll.

image

Turn 2.2- Dwarves

Turn Start Phase

No events.

Movement Phase

The Hammerer Company moved backwards, having some respect for the whirling loonies in front of them. The cannon turned to fire a the Burnin' Moonerz, the bolt thrower turned to target Zriglom.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The cannon managed to inflict 4 wounds on the Burnin' Moonerz.
The bolt thrower did hit Zriglom by scoring a 5, but then only caused one wound, leaving the shaman alive with one wound.
Two thunderers each targeted one fanatic; 2 hits, 2 wounds; 1 hit, 1 wound; 2 hits, 2 wounds. That put an end to that menace.
The Grey Crossbow Section targeted the Dumbsterz again, but this time did not cause any hits.
The Orange Crossbow Section targeted Cradd Horsestrength Mercenaries and caused one hit which wounded.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

No events.

Reserves Phase

The Blue Warriors Company advanced and turned, bringing them in a position to advance through the gate in the fence next turn to engage the ogres.
With the fanatics having been dealt with, the Hammerer Company retraced their steps to where they had started the turn.
The Red Warriors Company repositioned to be able to pass the Pink Thunderer Section.

Rally Phase

Bout 3

Turn 3.1 - Orcs & Goblins

Turn Start Phase

The Slasherz passed their animosity test, Gurbat was threatening them to "bash som' 'eads" otherwise, and the goblin companies were close enough to the stunties to not have to test anymore.
With the promise of some tasty little snacks on two legs and with beards, Skrinkic supported the Dumbsterz in passing their stupidity test.

Movement Phase

The summoned skeleton section charged charged the Blue Warriors Company in the flank, the stoic dwarves passed their fear test.
The Eeevil Eyez moved forwards and also pushed their fanatics out. The whirling crazed goblins rolled for a distance of 6", 9" and 7", which meant one made contact with the Pink Thunderer Section, who had killed their brethren in the previous ranged combat phase.
image
Four thunderers were smashed to pulp, but the dwarves passed their rout test.
The Slaherz were still busy climbing over the pump wagon wreckage and again did not get very far. On the flanks, the Dumbsterz and Cradd Horsestrength Mercenaries both advanced in their pincer movement.
Zriglom was out of out of magïck points, which the dwarf player was not aware of, and menacingly moved towards the dwarven engines of war.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The stone thrower crew again made a quite good guess for the range of the shot, it fell a bit short of the targeted Red Warrior Company and again did not deviate.
image
The Eeevil Eyez trained their shortbows on the Pink Thunderer Section and even managed to cause two hits, but the short arrows were not able to penetrate the light armour the dwarves were wearing.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

In the first hand-to-hand combat of this battle, both the skeletons and the dwarves all missed. Still, the skellies won by one and the dwarves were pushed back.
Then the dwarves rolled an 11 for their rout test! But the sight of their batallion standard allowed them a re-roll, which they passed by rolling snake eyes. Phew… That would have been rather embarrassing, running away from three piles of bone…
image

Reserves Phase

With the threat of the Blue Warrior Company charging through the gate been gone, Cradd Horsestrength Mercenaries repositioned slightly for the charge they were planning to make next on the Orange Crossbow Section.
Zriglom cunningly moved in a way, that the cannon was blocking line of sight to him from the perspective of the bolt thrower crew. He didn't want to eat another of these big arrows…
image

Magïck Phase

Zriglom rolled 6 + 4 for the wïnds of magïck, Drirzud 5 + 1; the dwarves had a dispel pool of 11.
Zriglom was too far away from any greenskins to feel the Waaagh! energy, but Drirzud had to take an 'eadbanger test, which he failed again by rolling exactly 3 instead to 4+!
The result this time was I fink I’m gonna…, Drirzud reeled around for a moment before vomiting out an explosive blast of Waaagh! power and collapsed in an unconscious heap. The power he vomited out was inhaled by the goblins surrounding him, which lead to 1 gobbo and Tagnasz, the unit's champion, having their heads explode! One gobbo proved strong enough and could cope with the power surging through his head.
With Zriglom not having any magïck points left, which the dwarven player still did not know, but began to suspect, and Drirzud lying on the floor, unconcious, the magïck phase ended before it really had started.

Rally Phase

No events.

Turn End Phase

image
image

Turn 3.2- Dwarves

Turn Start Phase

No events.

Movement Phase

The Pink Thunderer Section withdrew to get away from the fanatics. The Hammerers advanced, as did the Red Warriors Company. The crew of the cannon wheeled their machine forwards. On the one hand this cooled the barrel, reducing the risk of misfires, and on the other hand they opened a line of sight for the bolt thrower on the lurking goblin shaman.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The bolt thrower missed the goblin shaman.
The Grey Crossbow Section again attacked the trolls, causing three hits and three wounds, which killed one of the beasts. The remaining troll was kept in check by Skrinkic (the unit passed its rout test).
The Orange Crossbow Section attacked the ogres, but being threatened to be charged by them they were a wee bit nervous and all of them missed.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

In the hand-to-hand combat between the skeletons and the Red Warriors Company, all three skeletons hit, but only one caused a wound, which was saved by the dwarf. In return, from the four dwarves attacking only 1 hit but failed to cause a wound.
The combat was a draw.

Reserves Phase

Grumblefoot and Broadfist withdrew, fearing the nearby fanatics.
The Grey Crossbow Section also fell back, to not get charged by the Dumbsterz (or rather Dumbster by now).
image

Magïck Phase

No events.

Rally Phase

No events.

Turn End Phase

The unit now called Dumbster successfully renamed again to Dumbsterz, as the formerly dead troll regenerated two wounds and was back in the fight.
image
image

Bout 4

Turn 4.1 - Orcs & Goblins

Turn Start Phase

The turn started with the fun part, checking where the fanatics would go!
The first contacted the Hammerers, reducing the number of dwarves from 16 to 12. The company passed their rout test.
image
The second fanatic moved 4" into the open.
image
The third fanatic would have moved through the Red Warriors Company, but its base moved over the base of the second fanatic, so both got tangled up and killed each other.
image
Due to proximity, no animosity tests had to be taken, the Dumbsterz passed their stupidity test.

Movement Phase

Cradd Horsestrength Mercenaries charged the Orange Crossbow Section. This was the point in time, where the mercenary loyality test had to be taken, it came out 10:9 for the orcs. The orc player had to roll a total score of half or more of the enemy player's score, for the mercenaries to remain loyal — otherwise they might have switched sides!
The starting point of the charge was too close for the crossbowmen to choose ranged combant defence as a charge reaction, so they choose receiving at the halt.
The Dumbsterz and The Slaherz (who finally managed to clear the pump wagon wreackage) advanced, the goblin companies remained in place.
Zriglom continued to pose a threat and moved up the hill in the dwarf rear.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The stone thrower crew again was too acurate, hitting the sport they aimed for exactly, no deviaton which could have brought the boulder onto some dwarves' heads.
image
The Eeevil Eyez attacked the Red Warriors Company with their short bows, and even managed to kill a dwarf with their one hit, the first casualty for the dwarf unit.
The Burnin' Moonerz threw their javelins at the Hammerers and scored two hits, but the weak missiles bounced off the heavily armoured dwarves.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

Skeletons vs. Blue Warriors Company
  • The hit once but cause no wound.
  • The dwarves hit twice and cause one wound.
The skeletons had to take an instability test and were at -1 'to hit' for the remainder of this hand-to-hand combat.
Cradd Horsestrength's Mercenaries vs. Orange Crossbow Section
  • The ogres killed three dwarves in a blurry of the two hand weapons each of them carried.
  • The dwarves only managed 1 hit, but that wounded and killed the previously wounded ogre.
The dwarves failed their rout test and fled off the table.
Cradd shouted for his boys to not follow them, and they obeyed (leadership test passed).
image

Reserves Phase

Cradd Horsestrength's Mercenaries turned 90° and started to cross the fence into the dwarven line's rear. The Dumbsterz were slightly repositioned by Skrinkic to be in a better position for their charge next turn.
Zriglom moved towards the bolt thrower, who's crew felt a bit uneasy, having a shaman coming for them.
image

Magïck Phase

Zriglom rolled 5 + 3 or the wïnds of magïck, Drirzud 2 + 2; the dwarves had a dispel pool of 7.
Zriglom still was too far away to have to take a Waaagh! test, and Drirzud failed the 3rd in a row! For the second time in a row, he scored a I fink I'm gonna… result, this time only killing one goblin, but rendering Drizird unconcious again.

Turn 4.2- Dwarves

Turn Start Phase

No events.

Movement Phase

The Hammerers charged the Burnin' Moonerz, they started far enough away that the gobbos were able to choose ranged combat defense; but all the thrown javelins missed their target.
The Grey Crossbow Section fell back. The Red Warrior Company advanced towards the Eeevil Eyez.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The cannon's crew aimed perfectly, hitting both the Eeevil Eyez and The Slasherz. Three goblins and two orcs were smashed by the cannon ball!
The bolt thrower crew still tried to pierce Zriglom again, but missed another time. That sneaky git was hard to kill!
The Grey Crossbow Section again send their quarrels towards the Dumbsterz, they caused two hits and one wound.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

Skeletons vs. Blue Warriors Company
  • Finally, the dwarves chopped those skeletons down.
Hammerer Company vs. Burnin' Moonerz
  • The unconcious Drirzud was hit automatically, and easily dispatched of.
  • Six more hits were caused on the goblins, all of which were killing blows.
The Burnin' Moonerz routed, with the first free hack the dwarves killed the remaing routing survivors.
image
Seeing their comrades wiped out, even though they were only lowly goblins, had The Slasherz take a rout test, too, which they failed but were allowed to re-roll because of Ohguc's batallion standard. The Eeevil Eyez couldn't care less and easily ignored their whimpy brethren's demise.

Bout 5

Turn 5.1 - Orcs & Goblins

Turn Start Phase

Despite all the shouting and threatening from Skrinkic, the trolls honored their name - instead of finally charging the stunties, the two trolls strolled forward, intend on plucking some daisies (they failed their stupidity test).
The fanatic seemed to be intend on pursuing the Hammerers Company but was not able to make contact.
image

Movement Phase

The Slasherz charged the Red Warriors Company, who calmly received the charge.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

For once, the stone thrower projectile actually deviated onto a target! The hand-to-hand combat between The Slasherz and the Red Warriors Comany.
image
The template caused three hits, which were randomized; one hit on the orcs resulted in one casualty, two hits on the dwarves also resulted in 1 casualty.
The Eeevil Eyez let loose on the Pink Thunderer Section, but the one hit scored did not cause a wound.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

In the hand-to-hand combat between The Slasherz and the Red Dwarf Company, things unfolded as follows:
  • Gurbat missed with all three attacks
  • Ohguc hit Gothagzird Merryaxe, the level 5 hero leading the dwarf company, twice. Both hits wounded, one was saved by the armour - which left Merryaxe dead.
  • The orc boyz missed.
  • The dwarf warriors missed.
The orcs won 5:3; the dwarves passed their rout test, but were pushed back 2", the orcs followed up.

The Hammerers moved towards the orc stone thrower. The Blue Warriors Company turned 180° to face the ogres and not get charged in their rear.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The cannon meat its unavoidable fate, and exploded when firing, being overheated.
The crew of the bolt thrower finally managed to again hit Zriglom, wounding him and causing a little bit of overkill in wounds, sending their bolt right though him and leaving a gaping hole where his green belly used to be.
The Pink Thunderer Section fired their arquebuses at the trolls. They were now within the fear range of the giant spider, which affected their calm when taking aim a bit, still they managed three hits and caused one wound. One troll died.
The Grey Crossbow Section also took aim at the Dumbsterz, but missed them completely.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

In the center of the battle, the hand-to-hand combat between The Slasherz and the Red Warriors Company continued.
  • Gurbat missed with two of his three attacks, the one that hit rolled a 1 to wound… His personal contribution to this fight still had a lot of room for improvement…
  • Ohguc caused one hit, wounded but his target made his armour saving roll.
  • Two of the orc boyz hit, caused one wound, but that again was saved by the dwarven armour.
  • Two brave dwarves attacked Gurbat directly, but did not manage to cause wounds on him.
  • Two more dwarves attacked the boyz, caused two wounds which the orcs did not save.
The dwarves won 5:3; the orcs passed their rout test, but were pushed back 2", the dwarves followed up.

The supposedly killed troll regenerated the wound caused, stood up, looked around dazed and was hungry for stunty flesh - or was it daisies…? Well, definitely some kind of beverage… ah…

Bout 6

Turn 6.1 - Orcs & Goblins

Turn Start Phase

Skrinkic yelled at the trolls to daisy them real good (whatever that meant) if they wouldn't finally start the bashing! It worked, they passed their stupidity test.
The last fanatic crashed into the nearby building, killing himself.
image

Movement Phase

The Dumbsterz charged the Pink Thunderer Section, who passed their fear test and stood firm.
Cradd Horsestrength's Mercenaries charged the Blue Warriors Company.
image

Ranged Combat Phase

The stone thrower crew targeted the Hammerer Company coming after them, nearly missed with their point of aim, but the bolder deviated into the nowhere anyway.
image
The Eeevil Eyez sent their flying sticks into the back of the Hammerer Company, from the three hits caused only one wounded, but that was saved, despite the shield of the dwarf not counting as it was facing the wrong direction.

Hand-to-hand Combat Phase

This phase, there were three hand-to-hand combat engagements.
Cradd Horsestrength's Mercenaries vs Blue Warriors Company
  • The ogres landed 5 hits, and caused 2 wounds which were not saved.
  • The dwarves hit 3 times and caused 1 wound.
The dwarves won the engagement by 4:3. Cradd lost his nerves, he wasn't paid enough for this, and his unit routed. The initial free hack caused 2 more wounds and one dead ogre, then the ogres fled 15", while the dwarves on their short legs only ran 9". As the distances where more than enough to reach the edge of the gaming area, the ogres fled the battle while the Blue Warriors Company stopped at the edge, becoming unformed.
image
The Dumbsterz vs. Pink Thunderer Section
  • Skrinkic managed one hit but failed to wound.
  • The dwarves caused one hit on the trolls, but also failed to wound.
  • The spider caused 1 hit and killed its prey.
The Dumbsterz won by 2:0 and pushed the stunties back. The dwarves passed their rout test.
The Slasherz vs. The Red Warriors Company
  • Finally, Gurbat landed two hits and caused two casualties with his double handed axe.
  • Ohguc caused one hit which wounded and was not saved.
  • Da boyz managed to hit with both attacks vs. 5 and then to cause 2 wounds vs. 5! Then the dwarves saved one of those wounds vs. 5.
  • This left no dwarves able to fight back.
The greenskins won by 7:2, and the dwarves failed their rout test! But with Dogmir Broadfist holding the batallion standard high, nearby, the dwarves were allowed a re-roll and passed this time.
Still, they were pushed back 2".

Turn Start Phase

Movement Phase

The Grey Crossbow Section wanted to support their brethren from the Pink Thunderer Section in their predicament against the monsters. They passed their fear test and charged in.
The Dumbsterz, being charged in the flank while already being engaged to their front, needed to take a panic test, which they promptly failed. As their batallion standard was close enough, they were allowed a re-roll which they passed.
The Blue Warriors Company reformed at the board's edge.
The bolt thrower turned their engine of war around by 180°.
The Hammerer Company continued to advance towards the stone thrower.

Two hand-to-hand combat engagements took place this turn.

  • The last troll bashed the remaining thunderers to pulp.
The hand-to-hand combat resulted in a 3:2 win for the dwarves. The Dumbsterz failed their rout test - twice.
The surviving troll received two wounds from the initial free hack, then the unit routed 12", while the dwarves on their short legs only managed to keep pace for 9". The free hack resulting from breaking contact killed the last troll, and caused 1 wound on Skrinkic.
The Slaherz passed their panic test for the Dumbsterz routing. The Eeevil Eyez failed their's, but passed the re-roll.

Turn 7.2 - Dwarves

Turn Start Phase

No events.

Movement Phase

Grumblefoot and Broadfist charged The Slasherz, as did the Blue Warriors Company. While the two character models were able to make contact, the Blue Warriors Company was out of range.
Being charged in their flank, The Slasherz had to take a panic test, which they failed. The re-roll allowed by the batallion standard turned out as snake eyes, though!
The Grey Crossbow Section reformed.
The Hammerer Company continued their futile assault on the stone thrower.

Ranged Combat Phase

The bolt thrower crew tried to support the Hammerer Company and sent their bolt towards the enemy stone thrower, but the bolt fell out of the air and stuck in the ground 2" short of the target!

  • Grumblefoot killed two boyz
  • Gurbat hit twice, but only killed one dwarf
  • Broadfist hit once and killed one orc

Aftermath

With the greenskins being in complete control of the objective area, the dwarves withdrew when night fell.
I think Michael could have easily scored a draw, and probably even won the game, had he kept the Hammerers Company in the objective area instead of chasing the stone thrower. They would probably easily have annihilated the Eeevil Eyez, probably also the Dumbsterz and could have scored victory. He confessed of having forgotten about the objective at some point during the game.
My plan on flying Zriglom with his last magïck points behind the dwarven line worked as expected. The bolt thrower was busy most of the game huning him down. Had the bolt thrower been attacking the goblin companies, it would certainly have killed many more goblins than the one it finally did.
The game overall was much more fluent and movement was a lot more involved than in our previous games, where basically two battle lines apporached another. Especially the flanking ogres and trolls, but also the goblin stickas in the center, brought interesting developments to the game.
Next game will introduce Michael to magïck items and dwarven runic items.
