After all the gaps were filled with green stuff,
the models were give a primer of Molotow purple violet. I had a vague plan in mind, to make the trees 'fleshy', including the base. Painting the bases as normal nature (grass, earth, …) would clash too much with the basing cover I will use, so I thought, emphasize the clash as much as possbile, make it not look like natural growth, but like organic. So I choose the dark purple as a general undertone.
Over that I applied a zenithal white layer, as I would over a black basecoat.
The fleshy parts were airbrushed with Daler Rowney Flesh Tint. I applied this coat to the bases, the underside of the mushrooms growing on the stems, and inside knotholes and other openings in the trunk, to create the impression the trees are fleshy inside.
The tree bark was sprayed in a mottled pattern of Daler Rowney Burnt Umber and Antelope Brown.
Finally, the bark was sprayed with Daler Rowney White, followed by Raw Sienna directly from above.
I sprayed the bark from below with Daler Rowney Process Magenty, to re-establish hint of the trees being fleshy, and the mushrooms with Crimson.
The final colors applied by airbrush were used to color in the sculpted features, like the rocks and the different kind of plantish things.
The whole models were then drenched in oils.
