I started by painting the claws and the horns on the spine with a mix of Golden SoFlat Dioxazine Violet and Burnt Umber. To this I added more and more Golden SoFlat Titan Violet Pale, and painted thinner and shorter stripes towards the tips.
The gums were painted in Golden SoFlat Dioxazine Violet and Naphtol Pink, the flaps left and right of the mouth in Golden SoFlat Dioxazine Violet and Golden SoFlat Naphtol Red Light. For highlights I added the base red tone to the mix, then added Schmincke PRIMAcryl Zinc White to the mix for progressive highlights.
For the eyes, I choose Golden SoFlat Quinacridone Red. This was glazed in thin layers over the zenithal highlight from the airbrush step, to create a colour gradient similar to the one in my reference picture. Finally, I started adding Schmincke PRIMAcryl Zinc White for the forward corners and the highlight spot.
Then I applied oil washes.
For the wings I used a mix of Winsor & Newton Lamp Black, Magenta and Schmincke Norma Caput Mortuum.
For the green body parts I applied Winsor & Newton Lamp Black, Magenta and French Ultramarine.
For the yellow body parts I used Winsor & Newton Cadmium Orange Hue and Magenta.
For the light body parts I applied a thin mix of Winsor & Newton Lamp Black and Magenta.
When the oils had set for about an hour, I removed the excess with make up sponges.
A day later I added the final highlights. All the colors were waterd down and applied as thin glazes in several layers.
The light body parts where highlighted with Golden SoFlat Titan Violet Pale.
The yellow extremities were highlighted with Golden SoFlat Cadmium Primrose.
The green scales were highlighted with Golden SoFlat Light Green Yellow. The green skin parts were left as they were, to create contrast betweween the two types of area.
The wings were highlighted with Golden SoFlat Medium Orange.
All the hairy parts were highlighted with a mix of Golden SoFlat N8 Neutral Grey, Blue Violet and Titanium White.
Basically, the miniature is done, except for the base. But I did aleready discover a couple spots that need better blending, or some paint spills onto the wrong area the need correction. Still some work to do…
The Jabberwock, ’Twas brillig, with eyes of flame…
